The Lightbulb - Edison's realised vision.
Vision Without Execution is Hallucination.
Thomas Edison
Whilst working on an organisational restructure of our own business, I came across this quote from Thomas Edison and, although it is often referenced in business articles, the premise really rings true. You can have the best ideas in the world, but unless you can actually make them work, they remain pipe dreams. Which is why in business strategy, the work on process mapping, training and implementation is as important as the eureka moment itself...
The same principle applies to recruiting the right team for any organisation. Regardless of seniority, skill requirements or any other aspect of the role you are recruiting to, you may have in your mind the 'perfect' candidate, but unless you are able to find, attract and retain that exact person, your vision is, as Edison would say, a hallucination. The benefits of a solid recruitment campaign strategy are equal to the costs of getting it wrong.
Look on your recruitment as a project - you need to define your aims, know what positive outcomes look like, set milestones and understand how you're going to deliver every aspect of the campaign. A well-written Job Description is a good place to start, but the Person Specification associated with it is just as important. The Person Spec can be used as the basis for the interview assessment matrix and ensure you are matching candidates accurately.
There are a range of themes to consider in turning vision into execution and bolstering your team sufficiently to contibute to organisational success and, ultimately, increase your bottom line. From advertising a role to attract the right candidate through to delivering an effective interview and selection process, successful execution is the only way to realise your vision of attracting and employing the right candidate.
Once you have them, you need to retain them. Successful Employer Branding and becoming an Employer of Choice both require vision and execution in their own right!
